Measuring window recess depth

Step 1: Measuring Your Window’s Recess Depth

Before measuring your window, check the recess depth to ensure there’s enough space for the Guard. The minimum required depth is 3 cm.

To measure, start at the front edge of the recess, farthest from the window, and measure to the shallowest point.

Common obstructions within your recess space include:

  • Window handles
  • Latches
  • Locks
  • Winders or cranks

Even with a deep recess, obstructions can block proper installation. To check clearance:

1. Measure the recess depth from the front of the recess to the window.

2. Measure the obstruction depth from the window to the front of the obstruction.

3. Subtract the obstruction depth from the recess depth to find the unobstructed space.

Important: You need at least 3 cm of unobstructed recess space to install the Guard securely.

Since windows are often not perfectly square, measure the width in three different places:

  • Top of the window recess
  • Middle of the window recess
  • Bottom of the window recess

Record the smallest of these three measurements.

Next, measure the height of your window recess from three locations:

  • Left of the window recess
  • Middle of the window recess
  • Right of the window recess

Just like with the width, record the smallest of these three measurements.

Installing your Guard is quick and straightforward and takes just 5 minutes. No tools are needed for the installation.

Step 1 Lay Out the Side Frames

Unpack the side frames and place them on a clean, flat surface, parallel to each other with their inner channels facing inward for assembly.

Step 2 Loosen the Screws

On the side frame without the fabric panel, use the included screwdriver to turn the two tension screws in either direction until the cords de-tension.

Step 3 Position the Top and Bottom Frames

Place the top and bottom frames parallel to each other, and verify that the numbered labels on the adjoining ends match.

Step 4 Connect the Frames

Connect all of the frames together by connecting the fabric and the side frame with the upper and lower frames.

Step 5 Tighten the Cords

Using the included screwdriver, turn the two screws in either direction until the internal cords tighten. Make sure the cords are tightened evenly on both sides.

Press-fit the 8 included corner caps onto all frame corners - 4 on the front side, 4 on the back side.

Peel off the protective backing from the weather strip to expose the sticky side.

Apply the weather strip to all 4 sides of your Guard. Ensure all sides are properly covered without any gaps.

Is it really 100% blackout, or just marketing?

We measure with a Hisense HS1010A lux meter at 11 AM, south-facing windows. Result: 0 lux, the same reading you get in a sealed darkroom. If it doesn't deliver, full refund — including return shipping. No one else in the category offers that.

Will it fit my weird-shaped window?

We support rectangular, square, arched, bay, tilted, sliding doors, and skylights. Width range: 8"–98". Height: 16"–100". If your window is unusual, email us a photo — we'll confirm fit before you order.

How is this different from a $30 blackout curtain?
